New Community

Reconciled to be Reconcilers

Our Story

Founded in 2001 by Pastor Peter Hong and a small group of believers, New Community Covenant Church is today a vibrant and growing urban, multiethnic church located just a block off of the historic Logan Boulevard in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. In the founding and development of the church, Pastor Peter and the first members asked some key questions that continue to form us:

  • Can we be a church where people from all walks of life are valued, while encouraging each other to live ever more Christ-like lives?
  • Can we be a church that models reconciliation and forgiveness as Christ did?
  • What would happen if a generation of believers gathered across racial, social, and cultural differences for one common purpose: To seek the heart of God and build relationships to impact Chicago and the world?
  • Can we be a church that reflects and boldly proclaims the good news of the Kingdom of God in our broken and sinful world?

We want people to know that God’s desire for them is not to embrace religion, but to embrace intimate communion with Christ and with others. We believe God made us to be in a loving community, encouraging each other, and serving our neighbors.

Made up of peoples from an array of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, we seek to faithfully celebrate the diversity in the body of Christ. We also know that sin is at work in the world and we denounce systemic and individual sin as we imperfectly, but actively work to be justice-seekers and radically advance the cause of Jesus. That is the Gospel call.

Christ

  • Our preaching, teaching and worship are rooted in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Scriptures (Old and New Testaments). We believe that following Christ will change your heart, your life, your community, Chicago, and the world.
  • Christ is the center of our worship and community life. Our purpose is to individually and collectively become more Christ-like, supporting each other on this journey.

Community

  • Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Racial
    • As people created in the image of God, we believe that race, culture and ethnicity are part of God’s beautiful and diverse design for creation.
  • Intergenerational
    • Every Sunday as our children are dismissed for Kid City, our congregation blesses them by saying, “The Lord be with you as you worship.”
    • After service, our Mosaic Youth Group (6th-12th Grade) experience intentional community, and experience profound discipleship as our church raises up the Next Generation of leaders and Christ followers.
    • Life Groups Ministries serve the purpose of coming together to grow deeper in our relationships with God and with one another.
  • Intentional
    • As we collectively recite our mission statement each week, we are grounding ourselves in who God has called New Community to be.
    • We are a congregationally-led church, which means that members vote for leaders, approve annual budgets and objectives for the church, partner with and steward the ministries of the church.
  • Authentic
    • We believe our Biblical calling for authentic community includes new life in Christ and that the church is one body made up of many members. Also, we’re called to encourage and build up one another. And finally, that we are called to use our God given gifts to advance His Kingdom on earth.

Cause

  • Logan Square
    • In 2015, New Community purchased St. Luke’s in Logan Square as its permanent home after 15 years. We believe that the building in which we occupy, and the neighborhood in which we are rooted represents our growing commitment and responsibility to be ‘part of the block’.
  • Open Arms Ministry
    • Open Arms Ministry is a 501c3 non profit community leveraging collective power to end hunger, homelessness and holistic poverty to create nourishment, safe housing, and gainful employment. We do this through transformative shared space and empowerment programs delivering equality and relationships with our brothers and sisters in need.
  • Global Mission
    • As a community, we support this work through missionary sponsorship. Our disbursement team supports and stewards relationships with missionaries both in Chicago and around the world.
  • New Community Covenant Church, Bronzeville
    • In 2010, a small group of people were sent out from New Community Logan Square to start a new multiracial church in the South Side community of Bronzeville. A now vibrant and growing community deeply rooted in the neighborhood has been living into our identity as a reconciled and reconciling people by nurturing community, serving in ministry, and engaging in outreach with our neighbors. NewCom Logan Square and Bronzeville celebrate and mutually nourish this partnership. We respond to the gospel call together for community organizing, worship opportunities, and preaching collaboration. We are partners in ministry and support each other.

New Community was planted in partnership with and continues as part of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
