John Barclay III

With a BA in Biblical and Theological Studies and minor in Reconciliation Studies, John is passionate about the multiethnic church and children’s spiritual formation. John has been leading our kids & families for the past 3 years and believes that discipling children is a two-way street that teaches adults more about our identity as beloved children of God.

Shortly after getting married, John & Bobbie Jo moved to Chicago from Minneapolis for seminary in July of 2020. Bobbie Jo recently transitioned off of church staff as she works her internship and studies full time pursuing her 2nd masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. (Master’s Christian Formation 2022) After serving together for nearly two years, John marks that time of serving in ministry together as transformative and powerful both personally, maritally, and in his ministry call and identity.

John currently serves as a regional ministry coach for the denomination, and has participated in both faith & justice cohorts, and cross-cultural leadership training.

At NewCom, John serves as the “principal” overseeing children & family faith formation and also serves as an available support for ministry team members, families, or others in need of pastoral care or a processing partner. While many things are administrative, John cites that relationships, hearing people’s stories and supporting others is his favorite part of his work.

When not at NewCom, John enjoys reading, cooking, coffee shops & breweries, bike rides, sports video games, hanging out with friends.

The Barclays currently reside in Humboldt Park where Bobbie Jo is excitedly connecting with her historical Boricua identity.

I’d love to get coffee with you!
