Warming Center
The Warming Center at New Community Covenant Church exists to be a safe place where homeless and marginalized individuals in Logan Square can experience Christ’s love for them, and can take first steps towards the life God desires for them. It’s a place for folks to get out of the elements for a few hours each day, share a meal with friends, and get connected to resources. We help with physical needs, like clothes, toiletries, food, and first aid. We help folks stay in touch with family, job leads, social workers, etc. by providing phone, mail and internet access. We provide referrals to other organizations that can help with services like shelter, recovery, and health care, and we provide transportation to get there. During extreme winter weather, we extend hours and provide emergency overnight shelter when temperatures drop below zero.
Most importantly, we provide a place of true fellowship, where people can be treated as worthy individuals, created in the image of a God who loves them. Volunteers are crucial to this ministry; without volunteers, we would not be open. As the people who come in each day form relationships with volunteers, they experience the love of Christ, sometimes for the first time. It has been an incredible blessing to see people, who are so often discarded by the rest of society, being treated with respect and dignity by the people who have taken the time to volunteer. If you would like to be a part of this expression of Christ’s love, read on!
