Our History

Five years into its existence, New Community Covenant Church in Logan Square began planning for its first church plant. After much prayer, research and discernment it was agreed that God was leading the church to launch a new church in the historic South Side community of Bronzeville.

In late 2008 the church began holding informational meetings for those in the church being called to participate in this new church. By the middle of 2009 a team had begun forming around the vision of seeing a multi-ethnic church worshiping in Bronzeville. Throughout the fall and winter social and training events were held to invite and equip more people for the church planting process.

During this gathering and planning phase it was not clear who would be the pastor of this new church. David Swanson, an associate pastor at New Community in Logan Square, was doing most of the pastoral and church planting work but there was a problem: David is white and Bronzeville is a predominately African American community. Wouldn’t it make a lot more sense for God to provide an African American pastor for this new multi-ethnic church? Probably, but that wasn’t what God had in mind and through the church planting process it became clear that Pastor David, though seemingly an unlikely candidate, was the man called for this work.

In January 2010 God provided a great venue for our Sunday worships service in Drake Elementary School and we held preview services there throughout the winter. As spring approached it became clear that it was time to take the next leap of faith and begin holding weekly services. On Easter Sunday the entire launch team worshiped with our sending church in Logan Square and were commissioned for the work ahead. The following Sunday, April 11, marked the beginning of our weekly worshiping presence in Bronzeville. In September of 2012 we made the move farther south to Kennicott Park for our Sunday worship services.
