When I Speak

An original poem by Brenda Corely

When I speak, please forgive me
if you don’t understand

It’s my way of resisting
society’s oppressive hand

Many times I code switch
depending on the setting

Because if we want to succeed
we sometimes conform
to who they expect us to be

Your language, your street
My language, my block

Racism and poverty
A strong culture we’ve forgot

Trying to rebuild, what we had
broken and tattered pieces
still we stand

So when I speak, please forgive me
if you don’t understand
